There are only eight runes featured in The Forbidden Game trilogy, however in the Elder Futhark there are twenty-four runes. The Elder Futhark received it's name from the first six runes in the alphabet (F, U, Th, A, R, K). They are most often arranged in three groups of eight (aett).

dagazDagaz ("thaw-gauze") is the rune of the day or dawn. It is equal to the letter 'D'. (Tyr's aett)

thurisazThurisaz ("thoor-ee-saws") is the rune of the giant. It is represented by the letter 'TH'. (Freyr/Freyja's aett)

"Raidho, for movement, traveling. Like riding a horse. For protection walking between the worlds. It's shaped like an R. . . ."

uruzUruz ("ooo-rooze") is the rune of Aurock, an extinct wild ox. In The Forbidden Game it is the rune that pierces the veil to the other worlds, specifically the Shadow World. Uruz is equal to the letter 'U'. (Freyr/Freyja's aett)

"Uruz was the rune on the game box that Julian had sold her. "It's supposed to look like ox horns pointing downward, ready to pierce the veil between the worlds,"

nauthizNauthiz ("now-these") is the rune of constraint or containment or need. It is the rune that Jenny and her grandfather both use to seal the Shadowmen into the closet in Jenny grandfather's basement. It is equal to the letter 'N'. (Heimdall's aett)
